Article Abstract:

On July 1, 2003, an estimated half million residents of Hong Kong protested by peacefully marching in the streets, objecting to what is perceived as an effort to undermine freedom. Chief Executive Tung Chee-hwa now must now resolve this situation. How he responded to the SARS outbreak was also a factor in so many people marching.

Can Tung change course?

Article Abstract:

Tung Chee-hwa?s failed efforts to pass anti-subversion law only added to the unease many in Hong Kong are feeling, especially given recent bleak economic forecasts. For Tung to regain popularity, he must admit that his previous method of operation was not effective, and then find a new way to manage Hong Kong.

Beijing sees red

The outspoken Emily Lau, a Hong Kong legislator, described to members attending a Taipei seminar how Hong Kong has changed after reunification with China. She also angered China by stating that she had no opinion about Taiwan's reunification with China.
