No featherweight

Article Abstract:

Taiwan has a sophisticated stock market but is still seen as an emerging market by many international investors.Taiwan is liberalizing and attracting foreign capital as fund managers increase their weightings in line with the MSCI AC. Taiwan looks set to rise to 36% from 22%, becoming the biggest Asian stock market, apart from Japan. Western money managers are beginning to notice the potential of Taiwan, and there was relief when a major earthquake in 1999 caused less disruption than was feared.

Hot shares, bothered investors

Article Abstract:

Investors in Japanese stocks face a number of or problems such as lack of information, dilution of ownership through new stock issues, delays in dividend payments, and cashflow diversions. Asset stripping is also possible, and directors can sell assets to whoever they choose. There has been some improvement in the enforcement of rules, and brokers and traders have become more selective. What about the others?

Article Abstract:

The London Stock Exchange and Deutsche Borse have announced an alliance and have offered the Paris stock exchanges a junior partnership. This has led the president of France's Societe des Bourses Francaises to announce a proposal for a separate alliance with Benelux countries, Spain and Italy. There is concern outside Germany and the United Kingdom that the Deutsche Borse and London alliance could leave national stock exchanges elsewhere with a smaller stake in the market.
