No sunny side up

Article Abstract:

Health dangers from eggs infected with Salmonella enteritidis have led to advice from the US Centers for Disease Control not to eat undercooked eggs. The problems could be linked to the way that eggs are produced, since egg-laying chickens lack genetic variety, feed may be contaminated, and washing removes a protective film and allows contamination to enter the egg. A surveillance program to identify the source of infected eggs was 86% effective in 1990, but only 17% effective by 1993 since distributors mixed eggs from different sources. The industry has struck down finance for a program to track eggs, due to its influence with Congress.

Tales from the FAR side

Article Abstract:

Economist Jeremy Stein has developed the 'fundamental asset risk' (FAR) approach as an alternative to the 'new estimator of expected return' (NEER) approach for assessing risk. NEER is used when an investor wants to increase today's share price, while FAR is used to boost a firm's long-term value.
