No time for planning

Article Abstract:

Lord Walker will head the new Urban Regeneration Agency, taking over the planning for derelict city areas and the City Challenge and English Estates. The agency will only operate in England, and has a budget of 250 million pounds sterling. Lord Walker was successful in attracting investment to Wales. It is planned that small teams will be sent out to the regions, and there will be a small office in London. The agency's aim is to be responsive to local needs and maintain a social mix in its projects.

Enhancement in conservation areas

Article Abstract:

Conservation areas in the UK can often be improved by removing waste material and visual clutter, such as overhead wiring. Many observers criticise improvements such as brick pavements, floral decorations and fake street lighting as being inappropriate for these areas. Efforts to slow vehicle traffic in historical areas have also been criticised, the natural design of these streets can slow down traffic without any additions.

Managing old towns

Article Abstract:

The English Historic Towns Forum has 46 members and is committed to policies such as transport management, pedestrian areas and housing and the harmonisation of the historic towns' appearance. It is felt that tourism to these towns needs management, and traffic is seen as a particular threat. Recognition is needed by central government of the special needs of these towns.
