Non-Dutch courage

Article Abstract:

Demonstrations in East Timor have called for independence from Indonesia and a referendum on the status of East Timor. Indonesia has promised more autonomy, but the experience of brutality in East Timor, since it was invaded in 1975, means that this proposal is not accepted. There are few supporters of integration in East Timor, which was once part of the Portuguese empire. The Indonesian government opposes a referendum since this could lead to demands for independence from other parts of Indonesia.

Let East Timor vote

Article Abstract:

Indonesia claims that East Timor agreed to being annexed in 1976, but demonstrations in East Timor suggest otherwise. There is concern that Indonesia could disintegrate, but East Timor is a special case since it was part of the Portuguese empire, rather than part of the Dutch empire. There is also concern that civil war could occur, though this is linked to Indonesian policies of divide and rule. A referendum would advance the international standing of the new Indonesian president, B.J.Habibie.

Look, nothing up my sleeve

Article Abstract:

Indonesian President B.J. Habibie will benefit from the fact that one of his allies, Akbar Tanjung, has been elected president of Golkar, the most powerful political organization in Indonesia. Golkar currently holds 74% of the seats in parliament, and Tanjung's election will improve Habibie's ability to control parliament. However, his political future will still be determined by his ability to deal with Indonesia's economic problems.
