Nortel Networks Global Logistics

Article Abstract:

Nortel Networks has reorganized its global logistics operation as part of its effort to handle the requirements of its major clients worldwide. Nortel Networks Global Logistics has been transformed from a traditional, in-house distribution process to an organization that is entirely dependent on alliances with third-party logistics operators and transportation companies. Compaq switches to pre-position inventory model

Article Abstract:

Compaq Computer has adopted a forward or pre-position inventory model wherein components are stored near the firm's assembly plants and paid for only when they are actually used. By doing so, Compaq has managed to significantly reduce its working capital needs. The previous inventory system used by Compaq entailed the maintenance of several sites, where materials for manufacturing were stored and worked on the principle of a purchase and place system, resulting in heavy up-front costs for the firm.
