The UK government announced it will assume complete control of Northern Rock PLC, nationalizing the bank in what is expected to be a temporary solution to the mortgage lender's financial troubles. The announcement was made after negotiations with Northern Rock's board and a consortium headed by Virgin Group Ltd.'s Richard Branson.

Fannie Mae's net income doubles

Fannie Mae's net income for the 2003 third quarter doubled as a result of its hedging operations. Fannie Mae posted $2.67 billion (2.29 billion euros) in net income for the period.
