Norway: Pharmaceutical giant created

Article Abstract:

Nycomed-Amersham, created from the merger of UK nuclear medicine concern Amersham and Norwegian contrast agent manufacturer Nycomed, will have market capitalization of Nkr21.6 billion. It will lead the imaging sector, with revenues of around Nkr8 billion, while total combined revenues are expected to be Nkr18 billion. The merger is forecast to produce cost savings of Nkr480 million within three years. The current workforce of 11,600 will be reduced by around 300.

GEHE wins the battle for Lloyds Chemists

Article Abstract:

Pharmaceutical wholesaler GEHE finally acquired United Kingdom chemist retail chain Lloyds Chemists' in Jan 1997 after offering 170 million pounds sterling more than pharmaceutical group UniChem's bid one year earlier. The GEHE management team's offer of 684 million pounds sterling was put forward after being carefully considered and well planned despite having to wait for the results of an investigation by the Monopolies and Mergers Commission.

A straightforward approach

A cash offer from Alliance Unichem for Spanish pharmaceutical firm Sociedad Anonima Farmaceutica Aragonesa (SAFA) has been praised in the mergers and acquisitions industry for its straightforward approach. The acquisition has been discussed since 1993, when the original Alliance Sante sought to form a partnership with SAFA which was turned down. SAFA's management are encouraging its shareholders to accept the deal from Alliance Unichem.
