Weather losses may hit profit at Independent

Article Abstract:

Analysts predict that Independent Insurance Group PLC's operating profits for the 1998 year will be hurt by major weather losses. However, the analysts also said the company remains one of the best investments in the insurance sector over the long-term. The group is expected to post an 11% to 14% loss in operating profits to 50 million pound sterling to 52 million pound sterling ($80.3 million to $83.5 million). In 1997, the company posted 58.3 million in operating profits.

Norwich records improved results on new business

Norwich Union PLC reported an improvement of 33% in its new insurance operation earnings during the first-half of 1999. The company's profits during the period increased from 45 million pound sterling in 1998 to 60 million pound sterling. Norwich's improved figures showed that life insurance firms in the UK are maintaining solid profit margins despite pursuing additional businesses.
