Not a family affair? Political overtones of activist's murder

Article Abstract:

Huang Ching-tsai, an activist in Taiwan's opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), was stabbed to death by his uncle in Chiayi, a small fishing village in southern Taiwan, on Mar 14, 1993. Though the local government describes the crime as a personal matter, DPP leaders contend that Huang was killed to stop his investigation of the corrupt dealings between the Chiayi District Fisherman's Assn and the governing Kuomintang Party (KMT). The DPP, which had earlier won an election in Chiayi over the KMT, insists that this is not the first instance of violence being used to shield corruption.

Dangerous collusion: murder highlights criminalization of politics

Article Abstract:

The murder of Liu Pang-you, chief magistrate of Taoyuan county, Taiwan, has been cited by members of the political opposition as a symptom of a deeper problem, the increasing criminalization of politics. Liu's murder appears not to be related to organized crime, but rather to illegal connections between business groups and government officials. Liu has been described as an able local politician, who was indebted to business groups that had contributed to his election campaign and had made enemies as well as friends while in office.
