The economic problems experienced by the telecommunications sector led to a poor May and June 2001 for acquisitions and mergers. In the media sector French company Vivendi bought the American educational publisher Houghton Mifflin for $2.2 billion.

The merger of media group Pearson and CLT-UFA, owned by the German Bertelsmann and the Belgian Albert Frere, has created Europe's largest broadcaster, worth 30 billion pounds sterling. Further cross border alliances look likely to occur.
