Now for the hard part

Article Abstract:

Many economic and political challenges face Jamil Mahuad, the mayor of Quito, Ecuador, who appears to have won the country's presidential election. It will be necessary to take urgent action to deal with the budget deficit and inflation, and the coast's infrastructure will also have to be rebuilt in the near future. However, Mahuad's allies in the Social Christian Party are opposed to increasing the tax burden. He has made a commitment to long-term measures including increasing investment in health and education and tackling poverty.

A nomad's life is hard

Article Abstract:

Somaliland is a country of nomads and there was large-scale migration after the collapse of Somalia in 1991. Somaliland initially declared itself to be independent and was then hit by clan warfare. Peace treaties were then worked out by clan leaders. Somalia does not wish to allow Somaliland to be independent, so it has not achieved international recognition as a state. There has been security and stability in Somaliland since 1995, but trade has been hampered by lack of international recognition.
