Nurse scheduling with tabu search and strategic oscillation

Article Abstract:

Tabu search with strategic oscillation is utilized to solve the problem of producing rosters for nursing staff in a large general hospital. The problem of nurse scheduling is addressed by utilizing a variant of tabu search which repeatedly oscillates between finding a feasible cover and improving it in terms of preference costs. The problem posed by the division between days and nights can be solved by using the balance correcting moves namely, the day-night tabu list and the day-night diversification strategy.
