Odd men in

Article Abstract:

Japan has been criticized for tight monetary policy, but this applies less to the domestic view of the policies of the Bank of Japan, which has become more open. The Bank may seek to show that it is independent by refusing to print money, and there is fear that such a policy could lead to lack of control over public finances. This could mean a delay in the implementation of structural reforms, the Bank argues, and structural reforms are needed in order for revenue to be generated from which taxes will come.

The return of sado-monetarism?

Article Abstract:

United Kingdom interest rate policy is decided by the Bank of England, which has been criticised by labor unions and industrialists for not lowering interest rates. Critics argue that employment and economic growth should be given more weight, with less weight placed on the control of inflation. The criticisms are misleading in that lower interest rates may not help employment and output over the long term, and a focus on inflation can help achieve stability in terms of economic growth.
