Article Abstract:

China's Minister of Information Industry Wu Jichuan reminded foreign Internet service providers that no foreign investor is allowed to provide access to the Internet as it is a violation of China's laws. The statement implied closing off one of China's most promising sectors to foreign investment. Analysts say that the Chinese government views foreign operators of Internet portals and related services as similar to telecommunications operators. Under China's laws, foreign investors are restricted to the manufacture of telecom devices.
