Offshore revolution

Article Abstract:

Mabuchi Motor's success in the small-motors market is largely attributed to its late 1980s transfer of labor-consuming operations offshore. The company's strategy involved moving its manufacturing operations to decrease labor costs, while at the same time ensuring that research and quality testing were done in Japan. Its expansion projects for 10 factories in Asia were carried out using in-house reserves instead of commercial loans. The sound business moves of the company have enabled it to become a major small-motors supplier to automotive and electronics manufacturers.

Open skies: new Indian carrier takes on all competition

Article Abstract:

East West Airlines has emerged as strong competition for government-owned Indian Airlines ever since India's government began enforcing an open-skies policy late in 1990. East West's emphasis on service helped it to show a slight profit in the fiscal year ending Mar 1993. The company's favorable finances are allowing it to offer 45% of its equity in Jun 1993 so that it can obtain $19 to $26 million. Managing Dir Thakiyudeen Wahid believes that continuing labor and management problems at Indian Airlines will allow East West to increase its market share.
