Oman looks to private sector

Article Abstract:

The Oman government has officially announced the privatization of the Seeb International airport, with the winning firm to be announced early in 2000, according to Ahmed Said Al-Rawahi, director general of Civil Aviation and Meteorology. The new firm will be in charge in operating the airport from May 2000 and building a new terminal facility on the northern portion of the airport. In 1998, Seeb International saw a 7.9% surge in passenger traffic over 1997 to 2.76 million passengers.

Chile completes satellite navigation trials

Article Abstract:

The Republic of Chile conducted its initial test flights to determine the capabilities of wide area augmentation, a system that enables airliners to maneuver precision landings in airports using satellite-based navigation systems. The test flights were conducted at the Arturo Merino Benitez airport where FAA and Chilean aircraft operated with onboard satellite equipment. The airport is surrounded by the Andes mountains so that landings require precise navigation equipment.

Finding new funds: private investment is behind the region's infrastructure development

Article Abstract:

Arturo Merino Benitez International Airport in Santiago, Chile, will have a new terminal by 2001. The government awarded the 15-year build-operate- transfer concession to the SCL Terminal Aereo Santiago SA. The terminal work comprises the remodelling of the existing Aeroports de Paris-designed building and a new extension, increasing the terminal area from 25,000 sq m to nearly 90,000 sq m.
