General Motors' Saturn Corp, with the advantage of starting from scratch, is examining entirely new concepts in automobile sales. Instead of trying to flood the market with dealerships, it hopes to have fewer but more profitable ones. It is also pursuing exceptionally high customer service standards.

Success at a price: General Motors' Saturn

Saturn Corp has succeeded in manufacturing a high-quality car that is becoming popular enough to compete with Japanese models. But Saturn still suffered a loss of $800 million in 1991, and increased production would help to recover the $3 billion General Motors has invested in Saturn.

Japan's underworked marvel: Mazda

Mazda has been hit particularly hard by the economic downturn in Japan. Instead of using huge layoffs to lower costs, Mazda is cutting bonuses, eliminating unpopular models, streamlining production, and using other piecemeal strategies.
