Efficiency of financial institutions: international survey and directions for future research

Article Abstract:

The efficiency of 130 financial institutions has been surveyed and analyzed, with emphasis on frontier efficiency, or how close an institution is to a 'best-practice' frontier. Among the approaches used to evaluate efficiency are Data Envelopment Analysis and Free Disposal Hull, which are nonparametric, and Stochastic Frontier Approach, Distribution Free Approach and Thick Frontier Approach, which are parametric. The nonparametric methods generally produce lower mean efficiency estimates and apparently have greater dispersion than the outcomes of parametric models.
