Optimism over Three Gorges project

Article Abstract:

The Three Gorges project in China aims to dam the Yangtze River and provide almost 10% of the country's energy requirements. The project is estimated to cost $29 billion and will require over 1.2 million people to be re-housed. The project has raised social and environmental issues, causing some investors to withdraw support. The dam will create a lake over a 600km area. The Chinese government is hoping to raise $120.7 million with the issue of 1 billion shares in the project to the domestic sector in 1998. The idea for the dam originally came from Chairman Mao in 1956.

Argentina puts Yacyreta dam on hold

Article Abstract:

Privatization of the Yacyreta dam in Argentina has been postponed indefinitely by President Carlos Menem. The president has said that the scheme, involving a 30-year operating concession, will not go ahead until approval is received from neighboring Paraguay, which owns half of the incomplete dam on the Parana river. Such permission is unlikely to be forthcoming. It is estimated that it will take $650 million to complete the 3,000MW dam.

Three Gorges Dam conflict

Article Abstract:

The major Three Gorges Dam project in China is expected to attract European consortia, despite the US Ex-Im Bank's refusal to issue letters of interest for funding, due to environmental concerns. The concerns include the maintenance of adequate water quality and the impact of the proposed resettlement of displaced people. It is also doubtful that a Japanese consortium would be a prospect.
