Organisational structures and the boundaries of the firm: acquisition and divestment in financial services

Article Abstract:

The concept of asset specificity is employed to analyze the acquisition and divestment moves of UK firms in the financial services sector. Financial firms are found to use the acquisition strategy for growth or diversification purposes while divestments are resorted to to exit from sectors into which they have earlier diversified, but which are no longer profitable. Divestments in this sector are, however, lower compared to other industrial sectors.
