Dancing to the music of time

Article Abstract:

Diaghilev's views on combining design, choreography and music to produce great art had a great influence over Dame Ninette de Valois, who was in charge of the Sadler's Wells ballet company when it give its first performance at Covent Garden in Feb 1946. The sets designed by Oliver Messel, at at time when materials were in very shortly supply, were also to be extremely influential for many years after that performance. She believes that there are great dancers in every generation, and that it is important not to find new dancers who resemble those of the past.
