Overdue interest

Article Abstract:

It is important that Americans begin to increase their awareness of the history of other countries, according to Chinese-American writer Iris Chang. She is particularly keen to make Americans aware of the Great Nanjing Massacre of Dec 1937 to Jan 1938. This involved between 150,000 and 300,000 Chinese civilians being killed by Japanese troops, with more than 100,000 women being raped and tortured. It is also vital that Japan recognizes its violation of human rights in China. She regards the Nanjing Massacre as one of the greatest atrocities ever committed.

America's new voice

Article Abstract:

Asian-Americans are beginning to take on a much more active role in US politics. Local Asian-American candidates are gaining support because they have persuaded voters that they can represent the entire community. In contrast, at national level Asian-American organizations are placing more emphasis on ethnic identity. Asian-Americans have become particularly active in politics in California, where around one-third of the country's 10 million ethnic Asians live.
