PEPPER PUNCH

Article Abstract:

Exports of pepper from India in 1997-98 were 34,250 tonnes, worth a record Rs479.56 crore (47,893 tonnes, worth Rs412.31 crore in 1996-97). This performance was mainly due to the increase in pepper production in India and crop failure in Indonesia, Brazil and Malaysia. The crop failure increased the price of pepper to Rs200-220 in March 1998 (more than Rs150 per kg in January 1998). (gs)
