Pakistan draws interest again

Article Abstract:

The dismissal of Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto from her public post and the dissolution of the National Assembly have caused the nation's investment market to turn around for the better. A day after these developments, the key market indicator went up by 5.2% to 1577.25 while the benchmark KSE-100 Index retreated at 1507.46. However, fund managers caution that the highly-volatile Pakistani market may swing between 5% and 10% in either direction before 1996 ends. On the other hand, they hasten to add that the market's downside is limited while its upside is very promising.

Article Abstract:

The Jardine Fleming Taipei Trust has dropped 5.4% during the first eight months of 1996 even though the Taiwan Weighted Price Index has increased 20% during the same period. The fund's underperformance has been attributed to its low holdings in financial stocks early in 1996. The fund also invested heavily on losing sectors such as high technology. The fund has restructured its portfolio and has invested 20% of its assets in financial stocks.
