Paris signals softening on Aerospatiale

Article Abstract:

France is giving off signs of its willingness to further cut its interest in Aerospatiale SA. Reducing the state's stake in the aerospace company could pave the way for a three-way consolidation among Britain's British Aerospace PLC, Daimler-Benz Aerospace AG of Germany and Aerospatiale. French authorities, alarmed by widely circulating news that Daimler-Benz and British Aerospace are close to merging, are sending out signals that it is amenable to further cutting its stake in Aerospatiale so as not to leave the company out of the three-way merger. Meanwhile, the three aerospace companies have reported that merger talks are in progress, but as to when the talks would close have yet to be determined.
