Past imperfect

Article Abstract:

Students of Chinese history in post-handover Hong Kong will be studying from textbooks which have been thoroughly revised to conform with Beijing policy on Chinese history. Textbooks now either have no information on the 1979 and 1989 democracy movements or they contain shortened passages, the catastrophic Chinese famine of 1958-61, attributable to Chairman Mao Zedong's actions, is dismissed in a few words, and the Cultural Revolution of the 1960s receives detailed attention. Hong Kong students also have poor teachers for Chinese history, due to shortages and lack of scholarship in the subject.

A friend indeed

Article Abstract:

Indonesian-born businessman Ted Sioeng has carefully avoided publicity since his involvement in the 'donorgate' scandal, which involved allegations that China was attempting to influence the outcome of the 1996 US elections. However, he has recently been seen in Cambodia, and clearly has close links with Cambodian tycoon Theng Bunma, who is barred from entering the US because of suspected drug-trafficking. It seems that Sioeng now regularly visits Cambodia, although he is also active in Singapore, China and Hong Kong.

Comeback kid: Yang Shangkun emerges as new father figure

Article Abstract:

Former Chinese president Yang Shangkun has replicated Deng Xiaoping's successful tours of China and is reestablishing himself as a power among the party elders. Branded a counterrevolutionary in the 1960s when he was head of the general office of the Communist Party, the former general again lost favor in the early 1990s. In 1996, however, he follows Deng Xiaoping and Peng Zhen among the elders, and is lending critical support to Jiang Zemin as the latter struggles to hold the lead among contenders to succeed Deng.
