A ceasefire in Somalia provided a respite for those fighting for both general Mohamed Farah Aydeed and interim president Ali Mahdi Mohamed. Few are hopeful the ceasefire can last although each group wants to appease the UN and gain international recognition.

St Valentine's massacres: Somalia

25,000 people, mostly civilians, have been killed or wounded it the civil war in Somalia. The conflict is between interim president Ali Mahdi Mohamed and tribal chieftain Mohamed Farah Aydeed. Civilians suffer from famine as well as military violence.

Muhammad Siad Hersi Morgan forcefully seized control of the town of Bardera, which was the headquarters of warlord Muhammad Farah Aideed. A conflict between the two would be a repeat of the civil war that caused widespread famine.
