Turning over a new leaf: Malaysian logging firms look to diversify

Article Abstract:

Timber companies in the East Malaysian state of Sarawak, controlled by wealthy ethnic-Chinese families, are attempting to forestall a drop in profits by moving into other industries. Falling profits in the logging industry are likely due to depletion of forests and opposition from environmentalists. Consequently, the Sam Ling timber group has bought a 60% interest in Mun Loong, a Malaysian department-store chain.
