Article Abstract:

The euphoria over China's impressive 7.8% growth in 1998 is being tempered with anticipated problems such as stagnant exports, declining profits, increasing unemployment, increasing debt, excess capacity and inventories of goods that cannot be sold. While the government has carried out important economic reforms, it is deliberately stalling in some sectors because of fears that social unrest will result from growing urban unemployment, which would be exacerbated by the implementation of reforms.

Because nearly 80% of Indonesia's exports are related to natural resources such as palm oil and cocoa, the country has benefited from the recent increase in commodities prices. Moreover, the increase in commodities price has been concentrated in the countryside.
