People power II

Article Abstract:

The campaign by president Fidel Ramos to revise the constitution of the Philippines resulted in 500,0000 Filipinos marching through the capital, Manila, calling for him to abandon his plans for re-election in May 1998. In response, the president has confirmed he will not stand in the elections, although he reiterates his belief that the constitution needs changing. The announcement stopped a week-long fall in the value of the peso, but the charter call has weakened Ramos's party and boosted the chances for opposition presidential candidates.

Progress on parade: Ramos takes a military approach to problem-solving

Article Abstract:

Philippine President Fidel Ramos has accomplished much in his three years in office and has operated in the democratic system but has done little to bolster it for the future. His achievements resemble military campaigns in how he marshalled resources, relying on a tight-knit band of aides to push key tasks to completion. An investment boom is likely to fuel strong economic growth in 1995, with no immediate problems evident. Law and order remain troublesome, however, and official corruption is almost untouched.
