Per Kirkeby's brick enigmas

Article Abstract:

Unusual brick sculptures by Danish artist Per Kirkeby can be found at 50 or more locations in Europe. Some fulfill a function, but they are mainly ambiguous, not fitting into the traditional understanding of public art. Any functional roles played by Kirkeby's sculptures are incidental, rather than primary. The sculptures are mainly made of local bricks, and there is a conscious engagement with place. They clearly reflect Kirkeby's preoccupation with effects of sun and shade.

Reviving a fine example of Modernism's blue period: John Winter and Associates' restoration of High Cross House, Dartington, has given it a new lease of life as a museum

Article Abstract:

John Winter and Associates recently restored High Cross House at Dartington, Devon. The house was built in 1932 by William Lescaze. Part of the house is now given over to exhibition space and archival facilities. The former guest wing was converted into a small cafeteria with a terrace overlooking the garden. The restitution of the precise shade of blue used on the servants' block was the most significant external change.
