Per ardua ad astra

Article Abstract:

Many commercial banks have sought to enter investment banking, but this is a difficult task and Japanese and British banks have tended to give up attempting this task. J.P. Morgan has been successful in the US, but has not yet made a large profit from investment banking. Investment banks tend to specialize, but major investment banks have to operate over a wide area, and developing businesses is expensive. There are a number of differences between investment and commercial banks which make it advisable to separate the two types of business.

Living dangerously

Article Abstract:

Banks are seeking to deal with increased volatility, and risk management practices were not always shown the be effective in the crises of 1998. Diversification did not help where markets became increasingly correlated. There have been a number of crises which indicate increased volatility such as the 1994 bond market crash and the 1995 Mexican financial crisis. The risks involved in investment banking may be greater than was assumed, which means that more capital may have tobe put aside.
