Philip Morris raises prices, other firms follow suit

Philip Morris Cos. is increasing the prices of its cigarettes by 18 US cents (17.2 European cents). The price hike represents the second-largest cigarette increase in history. Philip Morris is the largest maker of cigarettes in the US. Following the company's price hike, other major cigarette makers increased their prices. Discounts are being offered in order to lessen the impact of the price hike.

Barnesandnoble.com posts narrower loss

barnesandnoble.com. Inc. posted a lower-than-expected loss for the second-quarter of 1999. The online bookseller reported $22 million (21 million euros) in losses for the period. This was narrowly-lower than expected. During the same period in 1998, barnesandnoble.com posted $23.7 million in losses. The bookseller's sales increased by more than three times from $11.4 million to $39.1 million.

HomeGrocer.com raises funds to expand in U.S

HomeGrocer.com Inc. has raised as much as $100 million (94.8 million euros) in new venture financing. The company is working to develop an Internet grocery shopping service that will encompass the US. HomeGrocer operates in Seattle, Portland, and Orange County in California. The company stated it is proposing the use the funds to open up to 20 new markets throughout the US.
