Pier pressure

Article Abstract:

Owners of pleasure-piers in the UK fear increased costs if the government decides to join the European single currency, as they will have to change all of their amusement machines. The industry is suffering from having to cover the additional costs of giving causal employees holiday pay and paying extra duty on amusement machines. Takings on piers are adversely affected by bad weather. A few owners are trying to widen the range of services on their piers, such as opening restaurants. Some 20% of the 55 piers in the UK have possibly been for sale or have been sold during the last few years.

The big cheese

Article Abstract:

Dairyborn is a United Kingdom cheese processing concern set up by Robert Segesser. He developed a way of keeping grated cheese fresh when he was supplying Pizzaland with a cheese product. He previously ran cheese boutiques but this business idea did not prosper. He seeks to sell products that large firms cannot easily copy after having lost a contract to a larger firm. His management approach includes an emphasis on empowerment and creative thinking.

Fuming about smoking

Article Abstract:

Company managers are advised to conduct a consultation programme with workers before deciding which type of smoking policy to introduce in the workplace. Consultation carried out before implementation may prevent later legal action by workers who disagree with the policy. Smokers may even be offered support and counselling by employers to help them stop smoking, thus reducing the risk of passive smoking to non-smokers.
