Exercising sovereignty: Indonesia sends a message from Natuna

Article Abstract:

Indonesia has carried out military exercises near the Natuna islands where a number of gas fields are located in the South China Sea. China has asserted historic claims to an area near the Natunas which Indonesia rejects. The gas fields include Exxon's D-Alpha block which is located within the 200 mile economic area of Indonesia. China argues that the military exercises have made the situation more complicated. There are other economic reasons for the exercises such as the prevention of fishing poaching.

Get in the fast lane: Australian Ted James has just the thing for Indonesia's roads

Article Abstract:

Australian Ted James launched an asphalt-making business in Indonesia because the local need for roads would drive strong growth and because he knew of a local source for raw materials. Now his company, Amerta Margayasa Aspal, is growing 70% annually, processing rock on Butoon Island to make 40,000 tonnes of cold-mix asphalt and 15,000 of hot-mix annually. Many small Australian companies have discovered Indonesia, with Jakarta approving $3.4 billion in direct investment in Jan 1995 alone.
