Placed in context?: Glasgo's traditions of grid and stone deserve respect; city re-invention has by and large proved unsuccessful

Article Abstract:

Glasgow is an untidy mix of unfinished attempts at reinvention, but the Victorian contribution of Neo-Classicism has endured. Many middle-class terraces are a successful mix of commercial and residential use, and contemporary version of been designed with various degrees of success. However recent urban infills and the Homes for the Future initiative appear to revert to a generally unsuccessful, fragmented approach, whereas good architecture and urbanism would be better founded in the present.

Barcelona success

Article Abstract:

An exhibition of modern public architecture in Catalonia, 'Arquitectura: Public Work in Catalonia, 1980-1989,' has been held at the Royal Institute of British Architects in 1992. There has been a high level of public building in Catalonia, particularly in Barcelona. Catalonia shows a high level of commitment to new architecture although not all the work is admirable. There are also good examples of conservation and re-use of buildings. Unfortunately the exhibition is not very exciting.
