Planning consent refused for Cardiff's Millennium Stadium

Article Abstract:

Cardiff city's planned Millennium Stadium has been refused detailed permission by the County Council. The council will consider various aspects of the design and construction, with particular attention paid to safety and access provisions. There was concern about the lack of detail in the designs and the plans to demolish the old stadium which will lead to disruption for local traders over a 21 month period. There are also concerns about the cost of the stadium.

Trying times for Cardiff's Millennium Stadium

Article Abstract:

There are doubts about funding and capacity of Cardiff's Millennium Stadium. The Lobb Partnership-designed stadium will be ready for the planning opening date in June 1999, according to Welsh Rugby Union officials. However organizers of the 1999 rugby world cup are reported to have started talks on moving the final match. Costs of the project have risen to an estimated 121 million pounds sterling, from the original predicted 114 million pounds sterling.

Welsh Office dooms Cardiff sports village

Article Abstract:

The planning application for the proposed 240 million pounds sterling sports village in Cardiff has been called in by the Welsh Officer, which could set the project back by months. It may mean that the promoters of the project, led by Philips, have to abandon their plans for Cardiff. There is opposition to the sports village proposals from Ferry Road landowner Grosvenor Waterside and the Cardiff Bay Development Corporation.
