Playing with the big boys

Article Abstract:

Videogames consoles have become increasingly sophisticated and are set to enter Internet surfing, and could penetrate shopping and home finance. Sony is to replace its Playstation with a machine that may be able to surf the Web, decode digital TV and play DVD movies. Playstations have also become attractive to adults. Games machines provide competition for PCs, which are sometimes seen as too complicated and liable to crash. There is also a vanishing difference between the production of games and of special effects for motion pictures.

Onward to pervasive computing

Article Abstract:

The personal computer is likely to become less important as it is replaced by more reliable devices such as network computers. PCs will not disappear and will continue to improve, but pervasive computing involves the domination of no single type of machine. The new machines will be simple and cheap and most of them will provide access to the internet. This change may mean that actions against the power of Microsoft may become unnecessary as PCs become less relevant.
