Policing the capital

Article Abstract:

The new police chief of Mexico City, Mexico, Alejandro Gertz, has to tackle the problem of police corruption. There is a high proportion of crime left unsolved, and the police themselves sometimes commit crime. Gertz plans better pay incentives and training and greater openness. His task is to prevent crime, while investigating it is the responsibility of Mexico City's attorney general. Mexico City has 8.7 million inhabitants and there are serious social problems, so tackling crime involves more than policing.

Over-creative policing

Article Abstract:

Corruption allegations relating to Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) have been made by Rafael Perez, who sought more lenient treatment for his own offenses. These offenses include the theft of cocaine from police evidence supplies. The allegations relate to the Community Resources Against Street Hoodlums program, geared to tackling gang activities. There may be changes made at LAPD as a result of this investigation, which could then be applied to other police departments in the US.
