Polo Ralph Lauren swung to loss in its 2nd quarter

Polo Ralph Lauren Corp. posted a $62.8 million net loss for the fiscal second-quarter ending September 30, 2000. The company also posted a $116 million restructuring charge as part of the net loss.

A hot designer can generate buzz but not profits

Article Abstract:

Derek Lam, a successful new fashion designer, has a $4.8 million a year business that will lose money this year. It is becoming more difficult to realize the financial success of American fashion icons with the changes in retailing and manufacturing in the clothing industry. Mr. Lam's business partner Jan-Hendrik Schlottman says "A really good artisan can't mass produce and you aren't going to get rich."
