Poor reception: Japan's Wowow TV struggles under weak management

Article Abstract:

Japan Satellite Broadcasting, a subscription television company known by the trademark Wowow, has so far failed to grow as its backers hoped. A lack of subscribers combined with rising debt prompted shareholders to demand that the president resign, with the remaining top management likely to follow him. The inefficient management imposed by Japan's Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications contributed to Wowow's problems. At present Wowow has signed on only 1.25 million out of 44 million television households. Most observers believe that Wowow's marketing would work under better direction.

Post haste: Japan's mail-order firms thrive while retailers sink

Article Abstract:

Japan's mail-order industry has grown much faster than the rest of the retail industry in recent years. Mail-order sales grew by 3.5% between Jan 1 and Mar 31, 1993 while department store sales dropped by 3.3% during the same period. Moreover, yearly mail-order sales averaged 11.9% in 1982-91, far better than the entire retail industry's 4.6%. Japanese mail-order has become a $15.5 billion industry chiefly due to its skill in marketing to the increasing numbers of working women who lack the time to shop outside the home and who make up 90% of mail-order customers.
