Poorer and angrier

Article Abstract:

Zimbabwe faces unemployment of between 25% and 30%, while real wages have dropped by a third since 1990. President Robert Mugabe is seen as responsible by many urban workers. The government has built up a large deficit which it aims to tackle through tax increases rather than reductions in spending. The currency has dropped in value despite discussions between the government and the International Monetary Fund about releasing aid. There is also concern about Mugabe's proposal to seize large commercial farms and give them to landless workers, a move which would affect exports. This proposal has been modified with a promise of compensation, but has also been repeated.

Your land will be my land

Article Abstract:

White farmers are angered by the Land Acquisition Bill, which requires them to sell a large portion of their land to the government at government-set prices, paid over five years, in local currency. Whites still own the vast majority of the land, and there is still not enough room to settle the peasants.
