Popular aids, reformers take up cabinet positions

Article Abstract:

Newly elected Japanese prime minister Junichiro Koizumi has appointed a few well-known reformers and some popular legislators, including the popular Makiko Tanaka, to the cabinet in an effort to change the traditional ways embraced by the Liberal Democratic Party that has been in power for almost all of the last 50 years. The article details the new cabinet members and Mr. Koizumi's strategy.

Kim selects reformers in cabinet shuffle

Article Abstract:

President Kim Young Sam of South Korea appointed reformers in a cabinet revamp designed to revive his government's popularity. However, analysts were skeptical whether appointments would be able to restore the diminishing popularity of the president. The president appointed Kang Kyong Shik, who is widely considered as a pro-reform economist, as the new minister of finance and economy.

Japan's banks face debate on what counts as capital

Article Abstract:

Japanese banks are claiming items such as deferred tax assets as capital, while some agencies say that this type of capital should not count because it could disappear. The banks need capital to write off their losses from bad loans and get back to financial health.
