Ports in a storm: shipping in Japan

Article Abstract:

The Federal Maritime Commission has announced that a $100,000 docking surcharge will be imposed on Japan's three largest shipping companies in American harbors as of Apr 14, 1997. The move has come about in an effort to persuade Japan to do something about its own highly restrictive ports.

Japan edges forward

Article Abstract:

The 1996 US-Japan defense agreement, signed by Pres Clinton and prime minister Ryutaro Hashimoto during their Apr 1996 Tokyo summit, signals Japan's willingness to assume a greater responsibility for its own defense. According to polls, a large majority of Japanese voters back the treaty.

Open Japan's skies: a trade row with America over air services will be a good test of Japan's willingness to deregulate the economy

Article Abstract:

Japan should sign an open-skies contract with the US, which would permit US and Japanese airlines to fly in and out of both countries. Such an agreement would reduce international air fares, which would benefit both Japan's consumers and industry.
