Poverty amid plenty: Japan

Article Abstract:

Homelessness is a growing problem in Japan. Although Tokyo has only 3,000 to 4,000 homeless people, compared to an estimated 50,000 in New York City, the problem will not be easily solved. The government has few options for the unemployed who have no family to support them.

Japanese sumo wrestlers are experiencing increased competition from foreign wrestlers. Because four grand champions have retired, there is room for international competitors to dominate Japanese wrestling. Two leading contenders, Akebono and Musashimaru, are from Hawaii.
