Power of incumbency

Article Abstract:

The South Korean government and the main opposition parties in the South Korean National Assembly are squabbling over the proposed holding of local elections before the end of 1992. The opposition parties are boycotting the new parliament because of the government's continued refusal to hold the country's first direct elections of local officials since 1961. Observers believe that the Democratic Party's threat to impeach Prime Minister Chung Won Shik could provoke widespread unrest in South Korea.

Political theatre

Article Abstract:

South Korea's Democratic Liberal Party (DLP) faces a crisis as Lee Jong Chan quit the party's nomination race and threatened to form a new group to challenge the candidacy of Kim Young Sam. Lee accused Kim of unfair manipulation and called the nomination process a sham because of Kim's refusal to enter policy debates before DLP convention delegates. Lee's departure has undermined the party's presidential election campaign as his candidacy will split up the pro-government votes.
