Article Abstract:
Elections are scheduled for Mar 2000 in Spain, where the Socialists have set up a link with United Left, and the conservative, Jose Maria Aznar, points to lower unemployment and political stability during his time in power. Aznar heads the People's party, while the socialist leader is Joaquin Almunia. Aznar has a slight lead in opinion polls which could be eroded by the pact between the socialists and United Left. The pact would mean tackling some differences in the two partes' economic policies.

Spain's ruling Socialist Party remains in favor despite a recession, corruption charges and peseta devaluation. Prime Minister Felipe Gonzalez boosted his ticket with the highly regarded judge Baltasar Garzon, and spending for jobs and training keeps socialism popular.

The sky changes: Spain
Article Abstract:
Spain's People's Party, the Socialist Party's main opposition, has made surprising gains in the polls. The People's Party is more concerned about unemployment than inflation and is in favor of sexual equality. The Socialists still lead in public opinion, however.
