Power steering; Jakarta's national car angers auto makers - again

Article Abstract:

Foreign auto manufacturers operating in Indonesia were outraged when President Suharto announced in Feb 1996 that a new national car would be built by a joint venture 70% owned by his son Hutomo Mandala Putra and 30% by Kia Motors of South Korea. Kia-Timor Motors would be given exclusive tax exemptions and would undercut prices of competitors by up to 50%. Foreign manufacturers, mainly Japanese, have already made substantial investments in Indonesia. Suharto announced on Jun 4, 1996 that the new national car will be built in South Korea for the first year because local operations will not be ready in time.

New drive to export

Article Abstract:

Indonesia's industry and trade ministries were merged under the supervision of Industry Minister Tunky Ariwibowo in 1995 by President Suharto in an effort to increase the growth of the country's non-oil exports. The government hopes deregulation measures will attract more foreign investment from electronics companies. Indonesian palm oil production has increased as has output from the country's minerals sector. Problems remain for the textile industry and the lumber industry which has suffered from declining prices.

But there's a catch...

Article Abstract:

Indonesia's commercial fishing industry has suffered from overfishing, excessive regulations and foreign competition. President Suharto has proposed to 'naturalize' foreign fishing vessels and require foreign firms to operate with Indonesian partners in joint ventures. A ban on the import of used fishing vessels has failed to help the country's shipbuilding industry because of prohibitive interest rates and lack of long-term financing.
