Power to the people: deregulation and new technology are working hand in hand to transform the global electricity-supply industry

Article Abstract:

The electricity industry is the next major market to face deregulation. The resulting industry looks to be quite different in terms of options available to businesses and consumers. Gas is the energy source most likely to emerge as the leader because of its cheapness and cleanliness. The US and UK are switching from coal consumption to gas. Utility companies are reacting to the changes by forming alliances and acquisitions with companies that complement their services. One side effect of the deregulation may be to offer service to the 2 billion potential customers in the world who currently live without electricity.
